Kathleen Marshall, nominated twice (for director and choreographer) for Nice Work If You Can Get It, loves to mount splashy dance numbers on stage, and this pastiche of Gerswhin songs, attached to a frivolous story about bootleggers and society snobs, gives her plenty of opportunity. But her biggest challenge is finding dance steps that co-star Matthew Broderick can do. Miscast as a girl-chasing rich twit, he works gamely to keep up. But, not surprisingly, he got passed over for a nomination in a show that got 10 of them, including one for his lush-voiced co-star Kelli O’Hara.
