Spring is coming, and with it the resumption of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones. The second trailer for Season 2 begins, as the first, with the oily-voiced narration of Varys, the eunuch Master of Secrets at the heart of most of the intrigues in the Seven Kingdoms. It then leads into a lusher tableau, which can only excite fans of the show and George R. R. Martin’s best-selling novels. We get transported from the icy marches beyond the Wall to pitched battles between the massed armies of House Stark and Lannister. Daenerys and her dragon spawn wander across eastern wastes, while the trailer gives us a glimpse of Melisandre, the iconoclastic, red-haired, red-eyed priestess of a mysterious fire god.

HBO’s advertising for the season promises war and we may even see clashes that aren’t fully detailed in Martin’s second book, where some battles took place in a kind of Shakespearean off-stage. And for those who got upset about certain events at the close of the first season, the trailer closes with a line all should heed: “Anyone can be killed.”
