A silent film will (most likely) win Best Picture for the first time in 83 years. The Artist will be the only silent film since the very first Oscars ceremony in 1929 to win the trophy — an honor that last went to 1927’s Wings. French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ love letter to old cinema will also be the first black and white picture to win the category since 1993’s Schindler’s List. A Best Picture win for The Artist would be perfectly in line with Hollywood’s current obsession with nostalgia, and a reminder that sometimes less is more.
