The second season of the acclaimed British miniseries Downton Abbey premieres in the U.S. on PBS this Sunday, which means that your bookish, Anglophile friends will soon subject you to weeks of inane conversations like, “Can you believe what happened at the charity garden party?” or “I hope the new cook manages to prepare the dinner to Lady Grantham’s liking.” As one of those bookish friends, I apologize in advance. For some reason, I can’t stop fretting about the future male heir of a fictional English estate. According to the Washington PBS station’s Downton Abbey character quiz it’s not my fault because I’m stuck up and old fashioned, just like the family matriarch Dowager Countess of Grantham (played by Maggie Smith). You can take the quiz for yourself here. Try not to pick Lady Edith Crawley, the annoying, less attractive sister that nobody likes. Or worse yet, one of the servants. That’s like taking a Brady Bunch quiz and finding out that you’re secretly Alice.
