Walt Disney Pictures’ John Carter doesn’t premiere in theaters until March 2012, but that doesn’t mean that Disney won’t crank up the old buzz machine to get people talking about the interplanetary action flick.
Based on a character by Edgar Rice Burroughs’ (the man who created Tarzan), John Carter tells the story of a Civil War-weary military captain who inexplicably gets transported to Mars. Carter becomes unwillingly involved in a brutal war between the planet’s people, who include Willem Dafoe in a motion-capture performance as the Martian soldier Tars Tarkas, and Lynn Collins as humanoid Princess Dejah Thoris. Carter soon discovers that the survival of the planet and its inhabitants rests solely in his hands. No pressure, right? While on paper the film sounds like a very expensive geek fest, ladies, you’ll be glad to know that star Taylor Kitsch run around shirtless for most of the movie. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.
The film is a coming out party of sorts for director Andrew Stanton. While Stanton won Academy Awards for his writing and directing work for the classic Pixar films Finding Nemo and WALL-E, John Carter is his first job behind the camera for a live action feature. Helping Stanton adapt Burroughs’ story were Mark Andrews and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, so you know the writing must be good.
