Natalie Wood was born in San Fransisco to Russian immigrant parents in 1938. She spent her childhood going to the theater with her mother, who encouraged her daughter to act.
She made her film debut at the age of five and got her big break when she was cast as Susan in the Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street, propelling her into childhood stardom.
During her childhood, Natalie appeared in over 20 films. Unlike most child actors, Wood successfully transitioned into an adult actress.
In 1955, Wood was cast opposite James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for this role.
In 1957 she married actor Robert Wagner, on whom she had reportedly had a longtime crush. Wagner later wrote of Wood: "I remember the instant I fell in love with her, she looked at me with love, her dark brown eyes lit by a table lantern. That moment changed my life."
In 1961, she was cast as Maria in the blockbuster musical film, The West Side Story. It was also a critical success, garnering 10 wins at the Academy Awards that year.
