This is a sick one. Before he got all respectable with the beautifully art-directed world of J.R.R. Tolkien in his Lord of the Rings films, director Peter Jackson was a pro at making gross-out horror comedies. This one, in which zombies start to turn up in Wellington, New Zealand, also features a zombie baby, a la Dawn of the Dead. But it is a scene near the film’s end that tests one’s definition of “pregnancy.” Having turned into a giant, rotting monster, a mother is confronted by her newly bold son, whereupon she cracks open her stomach and re-ingests him into her womb. He cuts his way out and is “reborn,” having murdered his mother in an ending fraught with psychological meaning.
