IN WHICH OUR INTREPID HEROES MUST…
Bring an end to a long and bitter war that threatens to bring a continent to ruin.
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT:
The game’s unusual setting and weapons technology — both rooted in an alternate universe that looks a lot like mid 1930s Europe — are quite unlike the forested and sword-based worlds of most fantasy RPGs. Even more incongruous is the art direction, which might be best described as “watercolor-y” — it’s almost jarring to see guns, grenades, and tanks on these pretty cobblestoned streets. But it all comes together in this genre-mashing title, which is anchored by a compelling story and a strangely artful approach to combat.
DID YOU KNOW?
While only a modest hit, the game inspired an anime series, several comics, and two CDs.
