For those unfamiliar with this semi-exotic automotive pastime, stage-rallying involves specially modified cars careering down stretches of road navigable only by the most talented and fearless of drivers. A unique aspect of the sport is its two-man teams, consisting of the driver (you), who sits behind the wheel and steers and brakes and shifts gears in a blur of frenzied activity; and the co-driver, who sits next to the driver, and reading from a map, shouts out a steady stream of directions and distances and similar advisories. In Rally 04, you heard the voice of Scotsman Derek Ringer (who drove with the late Colin McRae): his calm delivery — “Loong five right … into loong three left …” – helped you control one ton of steel roaring down a winding country road. “Drivers liked the game’s wide range of courses and road surfaces, while gearheads appreciated a customization package that offered more tuning options than Keith Richard’s guitar tech.”
