Cher Horowitz was not the first blonde heroine given just a little too much in life. This shallow but lovable socialite’s ancestry can be traced to 19th century England, where Jane Austen’s Emma Woodhouse made a career out of meddling long before Cher perfected the makeover. Amy Heckerling modernized the classic, setting it in a 1990s upper-class Los Angeles high school with plenty of paralleled subplots. Austen’s titular character may not have offered up as many contributions to our modern vernacular as the gabby girls of Heckerling’s Clueless, but a big “As if” goes out to anyone who denies Miss Woodhouse her rightful credit as the original teen queen.
