Noble Gesture: Fringe, Others Get Love from Broadcast Critics

The brand-spanking-new Broadcast Television Journalists Association has announced the winners of its brand-spanking-new Critics’ Choice Television Awards. The winners (list follows the jump) include some usual-suspects shows like Mad Men, but also underrecognized series like Fringe, whose John Noble (best supporting actor) deserves any hardware he can get, anywhere.

As I’ve said before, I’m not a member of the group, so I deserve no thanks or blame. My biggest gripe with the awards is the dubious new category (nominees only, no winner) of “Most Exciting New Series,” a prize for upcoming series that seems mainly a beat-sweetener gift to publicists, especially since it’s based mainly on preliminary series pilots. (Or not even that. Terra Nova got a nod, though Fox has screened no more for critics than half the two-hour debut—and I believe that, at the time this list was announced, it had only shown journalists a trailer of a few minutes’ length. Guess that was an awesome trailer!)
