A Second Look At: Bob's Burgers

When it first debuted, I thought that Bob’s Burgers was worth keeping an eye on, despite a slow start, because of some appealing writing and the general past level of creator Loren Bouchard’s work. I’m ready to upgrade it now: this show is going on my Season Pass list, and if you haven’t checked it out—or did and passed on it—I urge you to give it a shot.

The premise of the show is pretty much an anti-premise: a man runs a burger restaurant, has a family, laughs ensue. But ensue they do, partly because of the show’s good-natured absurdity (in an early episode, Bob hallucinates himself in a speakeasy bartended by a talking nightlight after he gets trapped inside the building’s walls while escaping his in-laws) and partly because of the strength of the voice acting.H. Jon Benjamin (Archer and numerous past animated shows) is expressive as usual, but Kristen Schall and Eugene Mirman were also excellent choices; they instantly define their characters with her urgent squall (“The Burn Unit is just me and dad!”) and his distinctive deadpan respectively.

This Sunday’s episode (see clip above) did a good job of fleshing out the relationship between Bob and each of his kids, but the previous episode, “Art Crawl,” is a contender for my best-episodes-of-the-year list. A clip appears below–placed after the jump because I could not in good conscience embed a sight gag based on paintings of animal anuses on the main blog page. If this doesn’t convince you to watch Bob’s Burgers, my cause is lost. Just don’t watch while you’re eating:

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

Haven’t managed to catch an episode of this yet, alas, but I have been watching Archer. I have a Pavlovian response to H. Jon Benjamin’s voice—just hearing it makes me laugh or at least smile.

Though I’ll never be able to love him more than I did when he was Ben Katz—breeding potbellied pigs for profit!, driving around town in his dad’s car all day with the parking brake on.

Aw, I miss the late ’90s!

“Bob’s Burgers” is elbowing “American Dad” out of the Sunday-night animated lineup, correct?

I’ll never forgive ‘em for that.

@Hoob – I have a similar knee-jerk reaction to Benjamin’s voice. His voice work on The Venture Bros., albeit short and intermittent throughout the series, is perfect for his character.

I’m definitely enjoying his work on Bob’s Burgers, but it might be more because of him, than the show’s writing.

I happened to catch the last couple episodes of Bob’s Burgers as well and throughly enjoyed them. Particularly the anus art one.

One MacFarlane show down, seemingly dozens to go….

While I agree with Hoobie and bro88 about Benjamin’s voice and current/past roles, I just can’t get into this show. I find it generally unfunny and at times downright obnoxious. Since I’ve been watching Fox’s Sunday night lineup for many years, maybe I’m just used to McFarlane’s crude humor. On a side note, re: Fox Sunday’s, truly funny Simpson’s episodes seem to be getting fewer and farther between with the last few seasons also. That show hit it’s peak a few years ago and I really think it’s time they call it quits before it really gets stale.

Love, love, LOVE Bob’s Burgers! Been hooked since the get-go + it keeps getting better + better:)

I also have been a huge fan of Jon Benjamin entire portfolio + agree that the whole bunch is well cast. So many memorable characters. I heart the cameos by previous Soup2Nuts compatriots like Brendan Small.

Fave episode to date, hands-down: “Sheesh! Cab Bob.”
