Lara Logan Beaten, Sexually Assaulted by Mob in Egypt

Disturbing news from Egypt: CBS News just issued a statement that reporter Lara Logan “was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating” by a mob while covering the downfall of Hosni Mubarak’s Egyptian government in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Friday. According to the network, Logan was separated from her crew and set upon by member of a dangerous crowd that included some 200 people; she was rescued by a group of women and Egyptian soldiers. She is reportedly recuperating in a hospital; she and the network, understandably, are declining further comment.

During the protests and the backlash, there was a rash of attacks on members of the press, and Logan herself had already been detained by the authorities. [Update: Earlier she described the harrowing detention to Esquire.com.] This is a new and horrendous development, and while (to answer a complaint I’ve seen frequently) the suffering of journalists is not inherently worse than anyone else’s, the fact that TV crews like Logan’s were on hand allowed the protests to go on without being crushed invisibly. That she was brutally attacked in the process is simply awful, and my heart goes out to her.

After the jump, CBS’ statement:

CBS News Statement

On Friday February 11, the day Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS Correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a 60 MINUTES story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy.

In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.

There will be no further comment from CBS News and Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

My sympathies and prayers to Lara Logan….just a horrible story.

I assume, James, that CBS had Logan’s permission to report the story? Otherwise, this would seem to be a rather horrific violation of her privacy rights….

Neither is commenting further, but I could not imagine they would have released the information without her having given permission. (Consider too that they held the information for several days.) Which is admirable of her in itself.

  • Chaddogg

Agreed James — very admirable and inspirational that she’s speaking out as a survivor. Still, just a horrible story all around.

Oh, that’s beyond horrible. Hope she’ll be OK.

Very glad she’s not dead and am hoping that the American press will take the hint and stay the hell off the streets now, before one of them DOES get killed.

This isn’t London during the blitz- hanging around that crowd is just plain suicidal at this point.

She is so brave. I know her strength will get her through this. I think she is an amazing woman that she puts herself, on a regular basis in situations that are obviously dangerous, and she never stops. Good for you, Lara.

Wherever your path takes you, you have already taught us lessons in courage and beauty.

    Thank you.

That is so hideous. The word that really hits me is ‘sustained’. I hope she recovers soon.
It takes a brave person to report on these events. It is disheartening and disturbing that the assault happened after the resignation.
