“Dandy” Don Meredith, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned Monday Night Football color commentator, has died of a brain hemorrhage at age 72. I’m not enough of a football fan (or old enough) to remember well his run with the early Cowboys, and my fondest TV memory of him may have been not a sports broadcast but his guest appearances in one of the best King of the Hill episodes of all time. But I do remember how he exemplified the job of the jovial, former-pro TV commentator, with his laid-back humor and signature “Turn Out the Lights” serenade. See the above video at around the 2:00 mark for a vintage 1973 intro from Dandy Don on MNF (and a vintage 1973 tie), and share your own memories in the comments. RIP.
