A little bird reminds me that I have not yet posted on last night’s Modern Family. I could have used said little bird this morning, when I left for the office, leaving my notes for the episode on my laptop across the East River. So today’s post will be abbreviated. I will say in general that there’s a reason Halloween episodes of sitcoms are so popular—you get to see the characters acting out and vicariously live out the thrill of having a professional TV crew art-direct your costume.

The episode overall was fine but not a favorite; I loved, however, that Gloria’s accent finally got itself its own storyline. (And not one that simply involved her being the butt of the jokes; Sofia Vergara’s exaggerated, passive-aggressive American accent was brilliant.) So enjoy the clip above, which also involves a closing Jay monologue that’s wry and to the point without being cloying. Welcome to your nightmare!
