BSG Spinoff Dead; Long Live the Other BSG Spinoff!

It always looked like it was going to be a rough road to a third second season for Caprica, but it didn’t even make it through the second half of the first. In a fairly unusual move for a cable drama, Syfy has cancelled the Battlestar Galactica spinoff drama before the season was even over. (Reportedly, the final episodes will air later in the year.) Don’t blame Steve Snyder; he’s only been blogging it here a couple of weeks.

Curiously, though, Syfy has already picked up a second BSG prequel, Blood and Chrome, an action-oriented drama set during the first Cylon war. Will it do better for having spaceships and dogfights at its disposal? Maybe, though I would hope this doesn’t mean that Syfy has given up on the kind of philosophical Syfy that Caprica represented.

Admittedly, I tended to like the idea of Caprica more than iots reality, except for a few standout episodes in the first season. But what it was trying to do was fascinating; to explore, within the contet of a corporate-intrigue soap, the ethics of creating sentient intelligence, the nature of consciousness and the implications of not just virtual reality but virtual immortality.

It was hobbled, though, by a slow-to-establish plot, and a plethora of storylines, some of which (the Tauron mob, the religious terrorists) veered into cliche. Ultimately, I guess I have to rule Caprica a Cincy—a show whose ideas were excellent and ambitious, but whose execution didn’t live up. (A la the term’s namesake, John from Cincinnati.) But I hope it’s not the last one we’ve seen from Syfy.

    Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

    One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

    @James

    Technically, this is still the first season. After the pilot aired, SyFy ordered 18 additional episodes (then cut to 17) and for some reason decided to split it up.

    I could somewhat understand why they split up BSG in its final season . . . somewhat.

    But it never made sense for Caprica. This was a new show that the network must have known was going to have a fragile audience.

    It’s pretty obvious that they wanted to limit the gap of time between Caprica and Blood and Chrome. I don’t know how interested in that show I am going to be when we know what will eventually happen. Some said the same thing about Caprica. But at least that story revolved around the culture of the colonies rather than the war with the cylons.

    Bummer. Personally, I liked it (which is not to say I didn’t recognize its problems). Oh well, I guess now I can finally start hitting up my friends for BSG dvds. Since it’s ending anyway, would it be too much to ask for Amanda Greystone to confront Zoe in the Holoband world? I’m thinking a long, protracted shouting match about death, life, and religion, followed by Tamara Adama running Amanda through with a katana…

    “Technically, this is still the first season.” Ah, yeah, right. Curse Syfy and their season-X.5 releases! It’s like reviewing software.

    After thinking about this for a little bit I realize that syfy is probably going to bring this show back AFTER blood and chrome concludes. They are going to make a ton of moneys off of this franchise. They are going to tell the story of Willy in his twenties, milk that for 5 years, then come back out with caprica and milk that for a few years. Long term strategy, its smart, and it makes sense for them to build up to the creation of the cylons rather then throw it in at the same time while caprica is on the air. Caprica is a great show, and it will come back, mark my words.

    Well, this is sad news. I think it was starting to find its feet, and I could watch Stoltz and Walker eat popcorn, they’re that good.

    I will, however blame Snyder. He takes one week off, and look what happens!

    I have to say I’m relieved it was canceled. I was watching it out of a sense of duty to BSG, but I found the first episode after the break so boring and ponderous that I’ve let all the other ones pile up on my Tivo. Now I can let them go with a clear conscience.
