While We Weren't Looking: Watch Letterman Kick The Leno Feud Back Into High Gear

Back in January, when the whole Jay Leno Show-Tonight Show controvery was blowing up, David Letterman made something of a short-term fortune in bashing Jay Leno and the suits over at NBC.

Well, I missed this yesterday, but Letterman came back from vacation on Monday night, and seems to have rekindled the anger at his old comedy colleague, leaving me to wonder: What happens when Conan O’Brien starts his new nightly show over at TBS, and the whole drama is revived by both the red-haired man who was squeezed out and the thin-haired man who relishes any opportunity to pay back the men who screwed him over so many years ago?

For a quick refresher, these were the little Letterman asides that so amused us back in the dog days of winter, when Leno was positioning himself to once again take over The Tonight Show:

And then there’s this, my personal favorite, where Letterman takes a stroll down Memory Lane, merging right onto Schadenfreude Ave.

But as I alluded to earlier, out of the blue Monday night, in an interview with Brian Williams – who regularly appears both opposite David Letterman and Jany Leno in late night  – Letterman’s NBC antagonism returned with gusto. Is this the way it’s going to be whenever a NBC personality swings by Dave’s couch?

It’s really quite scathing – a rant that, through all the squeaks and zingers, suggests that Jay is a fraud, that his interviews are flimsy, and that he’s an uninteresting rich man draped in the flag of blue-collar America. Pretty intense stuff. And who would have thought that anyone could make Brian Williams squirm.

All I know is that I’m itching to see what Conan does with the first days of his new show, how he’s going to get around whatever contract he signed to take aim at the Leno empire. And with both Conan and Dave, two disgruntled ex-NBCers laying waste to the Peacock, this could be the best fall for late-night TV in quite some time.

    Glee Watch: NYADA, NYADA, NYADA

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

Yeah, poor little Dave…..he’s really been “screwed over,” hasn’t he? The guy makes $35 million a year for telling jokes every night. Are we supposed to pity him for the rest of his life? He’s a nasty piece of work who can’t stop being bitter and hostile. What more does the guy want? Obviously, his money doesn’t buy him any happiness.

Hey, some of us actually prefer our comedians to be bitter and hostile.

Say what you will about Dave, at least he’s real. Watch his tribute to Johnny Carson and tell me that’s not real. Watch his first show after 9/11, or the first show after his heart attack. Watch how uncomfortable Williams is trying to waffle and backpedal in this interview. That’s real, it’s not the BS you’re used to shoveling in that braindead land of sun and smog you call Los Angeles, where talk shows exist for celebrities to promote their new movies or shows without the fear of being made to look stupid or uncomfortable in any way.

My my….you are certainly filled with hostility! Jay also did a wonderful tribute to Johnny Carson, and a touching tribute right after 9-11.
So according to you, everyone in California is “brain dead?” That’s a very childish and immature comment. It makes you sound like you’re still in junior high school.
I’ve never felt sorry for Dave because he does a nightly show on CBS instead of NBC. But what the heck, he can go cry on his huge stacks of money!
And Dave spends a lot of time on HIS show promoting celebrities’ new movies and TV shows. It’s not just an L.A. thing.
