Stephen Chow is to this movie what Pelé was to soccer itself: he’s all over it. This fun Hong Kong–made film was directed, co-written and led on-screen by Chow (he probably did the catering too), who plays Sing, a martial-arts master turned street cleaner. He leads a group of Shaolin monks who take on the all-conquering Team Evil. Be warned: the plot is irrelevant, as each soccer sequence is punctuated by Jackie Chan–style slapstick, Quentin Tarantino–inspired lunacy, beautifully harnessed special effects and the odd song-and-dance routine. Truth be told, there’s more fun to be had in watching this than in most actual games.
