No one ever said superhero movies had to be subtle. But … Nuclear Man? Really? The Quest for Peace? Really? The subtitle — which refers to Superman’s goal to get rid of all of Earth’s nuclear weapons — is understandable. Somewhat. It was the waning years of the Cold War, and nuclear fears were still to be taken seriously. But it’s still as far over the top as many of the film’s action set pieces. Hurling the Statue of Liberty into Metropolis? A brawl on the moon? Why not just joust with the Washington Monument and the Empire State Building while you’re at it? Also, Jon Cryer’s in it. ‘Nuff said.
