The Morning After: A Re-Introduction

HBO

It’s been a while since I’ve given a little introduction to The Morning After posts at Tuned In. There’s a lot of TV on television, and most nights there are more noteworthy shows—for better or worse—than I have time or inclination to write about the next day, because of other deadlines, other obligations and extreme personal laziness (a medical condition for which I have a note from my doctor).

That’s where The Morning After and you come in. The Morning After is meant to be a daily post—admittedly, I have not always been great at getting one up every day, see the note from my doctor—that invites you to discuss anything from the previous day’s TV.

Sometimes, I might also use it to give a very quick shoutout to something I’m not going to review: say, last night’s harrowing installment of The Pacific, which marked Sledge’s graduation from naif to hardened soldier. Sometimes I might use it to invite comment on a show I haven’t kept up on that you might be interested in: is this season’s installment of The Amazing Race worth following? And sometimes I may just have nothing else to say and use the open thread to see if you do, the last resort of the lazy blogger.

So: you have anything to say?

I spent a rainy, blustery weekend here in Chicago in front of the TV, catching up on some shows and movies that I had missed…..but I haven’t seen this week’s Pacific or Treme yet (saving those for post-Chuck viewing tonight, actually). That being said:

    1. I watched the first two episodes of Treme. I LOVED it. And James, I had the same sort of reaction that you did to the scene of the buskers playing music for the Wisconsin church-mission-trip kids, so reading your dialogue with David Simon was really enlightening.

    2. On the same note, Bunk is still getting love from all of the ladies, and Freamon is still one bad mofo. (Bonus: any truth to the fact that Freamon left the copper-wire stealing kid in a boarded up abandoned house, and called his white, alcoholic, womanizing friend McNulty to make the beating death look like the work of a serial killer?)

    3. Saw the CSI “lab rat” focused episode from 2 weeks ago, and all I can say is that Hodges and Wendy are ROCKETING up the charts in terms of TV couples that REALLY need to get together. They’ve had so many cute episodes together, the chemistry is undeniable, and let’s face it, Hodges getting with someone as hot as Wendy (Liz Vassey) gives hope to all of us borderline nerdy men out there….

    4. The Pacific really found its footing in these Peilelu episodes. Harrowing television….(and I realize I say that without seeing last night’s installment).

    5. Caught “L.A. Confidential” on Encore last night, and appreciated again how phenomenal that movie was from start to finish. Re-watch it if you can….you’ll be glad you did.

    6. Oh, and the Ricky Gervais show? Loving it. I listened to all the podcasts that they’re based on, so no surprises for me, but the demented, moronic ramblings of Karl Pilkington are perhaps the funniest thing on television.

DVR’d “America: The Story of Us” (bad title) on the History Channel last night to watch on Lost-repeat Tuesday. Haven’t seen much in the way of criticism about it so I’m not expecting much. Did anyone watch it? Was it worthwhile? Or should I skip it and just watch the Lost repeat episode?

Yeah, the Peilelu episodes have been really good, and last night’s may have been the best of the bunch.

I caught some of LA Confidential too! Love the movie but that soundtrack is really grating…

I’m behind on Treme, but looking forward to watching it.

I tried to watch The Pacific but apparantly I’m not cut out for war, because I couldn’t watch the whole thing. I’m not normally one to be scared away from TV by disturbing imagery, but after the pebble-tossing-in-the-skull bit I just couldn’t handle it. Its DVRd, so maybe I can come back to it later.

The new season of Doctor Who is off to a marvelous start – Saturday’s episode The Beast Below was pretty wild, and full of interesting moral dilemmas and creepy imagery. I am really liking the new Doctor and his new companion, and I think they are developing great chemistry/rapport.

    Looking forward to Chuck tonite!!!

The cowboys on The Amazing Race have been gradually winning me over all season, but last night they became one of my all-time favorite teams. They’re smart, resourceful, and hilarious (“Tranquil?”). Plus, you have to love the music that comes on every time they’re on the screen.

The Amazing Race is worth following only because of cowboys and the detectives. That dipsy blonde who made sure the lesbian couple were eliminated from the race last week is so annoying. She wouldn’t know real competition if it hit her in the face. The cowboys have won 4 legs now and nobody sees them as competition. And one leg they came from last place, did a speed bump and landed in first place! It was great and never before accomplished. I am glad Jeff and Jordan are long gone. I disliked that insipid little twit on Big Brother last summer and I disliked her even more on AR.
