Idol Watch: The Not-So-Magnificent Seven

In James Poniewozik’s temporary absence, I’ve been asked to write tonight’s Idol Watch. There’s just one problem: somehow, even after eight and a half seasons, I’ve never seen a single episode of the nation’s most popular singing competition. Ever. I don’t watch reality TV and I’m terrified of Ryan Seacrest, the magical robot. I do, however, have some Idol Watch qualifications: I listen to a lot of music and I’m very judgmental. That, and a little recon work on YouTube, is all you need to be an American Idol viewer, right?

Calling last night’s performances ‘inspired’ was a long stretch – it was honestly one of the more painful nights of American Idol I’ve seen in quite a few years – and distressingly so for an episode so far into the season when everyone should be at the top of their game now. With that said, Crystal, Casey, and Lee were probably the best of the night (given, not great), but the other four…ouch. I think Aaron’s going home to be honest…http://thesmogger.com/2010/04/21/idol-hangover-the-final-7-perform/

Last night was so freaking boring. And again Crystal played last so I had to watch the whole stupid thing. I’ll join the bandwagon that thinks Lee and Crystal are the only reasons to watch at all. I wished I had DVR’d it so I could ffd instead of watching the whole thing live.

That said, I really did enjoy Crystal and Lee last night, and thought they were in a different league than everyone else. That’s not saying a lot, but I really do like both of them.
