This has been a guitar-heavy season of Idol, and Crystal has worn an axe so constantly that I thought if she stood onstage without one, she would reveal a giant sideways-8-shaped hole in her abdomen. Turns out she’s intact! She gives a very powerful opening on piano, although it seems a little awkward transitioning from piano to singing solo, as if she had just got up from her seat to sing with the band at a wedding. But there’s no doubt she’s vocally up to a big classic, and it gets her past the do-something-different hurdle.
