Modern Family Watch: "I Feel Like I Ate the Sun!"

It’s probably too late to be posting on Wednesday’s Modern Family, but I thought I should briefly put up something (1) to say, for the record, that “Starry Night” was one of my favorite episodes yet and (2) to quote Cameron’s line (see clip above), which is still making me laugh out loud two days later.

Besides showing us a different side to Cameron, who’s usually the most socially adept of the extended clan, the episode also did well by the Dunphy family. I’ve said it before, but Phil is sort of the Michael Scott of Modern Family, and the corollary to that is that if his character never got a chance to show that he’s competent (here, as a father), he’d become a tired joke. His storyline this week provided a funny take on helicopter parenting, as Phil’s strategy of fathering without sfathering actually worked.

It also demonstrated the show’s bench strength; this week, Nolan Gould really impressed me as the dim-but-actually-not-so-dim Luke. All that and Jesse Tyler Ferguson in a dress! Can you find a flaw in this episode?

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

I absolutely loved this episode! Cameron`s Ivy League turned racist insult made me laugh so hard I nearly cried, and I`m still laughing. Oh, and the ADHD symptons fantastically demonstrated by Phil.

I`m glad you did post on it. I was beginning to think that you didn`t like it and therefore didn`t think it was good enough to post on.
