Flaming Lips at SXSW — 2006
The Flaming Lips don’t play shows — they put on spectacles. The alt-rockers embrace eccentricity in their live performances: they’ve rolled around in giant spheres, constructed a giant UFO, even dressed concertgoers up in animal costumes and Santa hats and had them dance around onstage. Psychedelic! Their secret show during Austin’s 2006 SXSW (South by Southwest) was no less groovy. The Lips covered Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” duetted with female rapper Peaches and let two fans get engaged onstage. Well, marriage is supposedto be a trip, right?

Bob Dylan at the Newport
Folk Festival — 1965
Bob Dylan had only just gained national renown as a folksinger when his 1965 release Bringing It All Back Homeeschewed his roots by using electric guitar in half the tracks. In that spirit, Dylan’s performance at July ’65′s Newport Folk Festival incorporated a backing blues band and electric guitar.
The audience did not dig it, man. He drew vigorous boos and left after only four songs, only to be coaxed back onstage for a disjointed acoustic set. (Longstanding rumors that Pete Seeger tried to cut the sound system with an ax turned out to be untrue.) Dylan didn’t return to Newport until 2002, when he was able to bring his electric guitar back without fear.
