Give Us Our Gay Christian Super Bowl Ads, CBS!

Super Bowl Sunday is a little more a week away, and the most exciting matchup so far is on the advertising field. CBS, which used to observe a proscription against “issue” advertising during the big game, recently dropped its objection, to accept an ad from pro-life evangelical group Focus on the Family, featuring star quarterback Tim Tebow. Now it’s reportedly in the midst of considering a spot from a gay dating service, Mancrunch—which is simultaneously perhaps the gayest and most football-appropriate name I have ever heard.

[Update: CBS just confirmed that it's rejecting the Mancrunch ad, which showed two male football fans kissing, though it says it's "open to working with the client on alternative submissions." Yeah—like heterosexual ones.]

I say let them both air. The idea of a TV network acting as the gatekeeper for appropriate and inappropriate idea has always been ridiculous. But if you’re going to allow controversial themes into the game, then let everyone’s in.

Objectionable, after all, is in the eye of the beholder. It seems ridiculous to start saying that espousing religion or love between two men is objectionable in an ad environment of alcohol-pushing animals, slapstick violence and Danica Patrick’s cleavage.

The best and worst thing about capitalist advertising is that it is by nature amoral. If you’ve got the money and the market, you’re in. The alternative, though, is for a giant media corporation to decide whether one lifestyle is more moral, unobjectionable or “normal” than another.

Yes, families watch the Super Bowl together. I have kids, and there is nothing that repulses me more than people using their kids to justify imposing their personal agendas on the rest of society. Maybe you don’t want to have to answer your kids’ questions about abortion or homosexuality during the Super Bowl. Fair enough. Maybe I don’t want my kids being pitched high-calorie sodas that are helping turn us into the amoebic blobs from the last half of Wall*e.

My family has its own moral values, which may or may not be different from yours, and I neither need nor want Les Moonves to enforce them for me. From time to time, we all have to encounter things on TV or in ads that go against those values, and we have to deal with it, because encountering ideas that differ from yours is what happens in life. Sometimes I have to explain to my kids things I’d rather not talk about. Like orthodontia bills and 3 a.m. bad-dream wakeups, it’s one of the things I signed up for.

Alternatively, CBS could implement a consistent policy of rejecting any potentially objectionable ads. Ones about religion. Or homosexuality. Or violence, or sex, or alcohol, or junk food. Which would leave…?

Well, maybe they could convince Pixar to buy 70 ad slots for Toy Story 3.

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

    James,

I have never laughed so hard while reading this blog.

Hehe, mancrunch. Other than that well said.

  • treepeony

    Mancrunch! Heee!

  • mrbilliam

What is the “Focus on the Family” ad actually for? If it is a pro-life ad, then I understand the controversy, but it doesn’t sound like it is. When I hear “Focus on the Family” I think of the little segments (giving tips about parenting, etc.) that used to air on the CBS morning show.

  • http://www.simonvinkenoog.nl/beeld/Yogi%20-%20Annelies%20Rigter.jpg yogi

From what I’ve read elsewhere it is a pro-life ad with Tebow and his mom talking about how the doctor recommended that Tebow’s mom have a late-tem abortion with Tebow and therefore all abortions are bad.

  • deckerfamily03

Focus on the Family is an extremely right wing religous group, that is hellbent on pushing their views on everyone in the country, and believe that their beliefs are the only thing that anyone should ever believe in. I don’t have a problem with them being allowed to air the commercial, but if they are able to then others should be able to as well.

  • masurix

I’d like the Mancrunch ad to air directly after the Focus on the Family ad, please.

    Serious face -> OMG face.

  • Rorschach

I don’t have any problem with CBS airing the pro life ad… except they refused to air the “hey we are a church that accepts homosexuals” ad a few years ago.

Once again though, it’s the poor Christian majority that is being oppressed.

  • archstanton68

Most football fans are sick of hearing about Tim Tebow. Airing an ad that teases us with the possibility of him not existing may not be the best way to get people on the anti-abortion side.

    Relax, I’m kidding. kind of.

I say we keep sexual preference, religion, and politics out of the Superbowl commercials. It’s Football!!!

There are plenty of shows 24/7 to air all of these ads.

YAY CBS. Don’t get drawn into drama.

I doubt CBS would run a Saturday morning cartoon as a commercial either. Not the Venue.

And by now the gay dating site has gotten enough publicity to crash their website.

This is just one more attempt by the homosexual agenda to impose thier views upon the rest of American society. Its is no longer a debate about choice, its now unconditional acceptance regardless if their lifestyle choice is welcome or not.

I was molested and raped as a child by a homosexual pedophile. And what he did distorted my self-preception, thus my life. My argument is not from a religious view but from a moral view. And to those of you who are in favor of an add like this being aired with so many children watching, You are a mentaly sick and demented individual!!!

  • orchidbloom

Wsimpson, I am sorry that happened to you. But you should know that gay people are not child molesters. Child molesters, gay or straight, are child molesters.

All gay people want is equality. That means stupid or lascivious ads targeting gay people shouldn’t be treated any differently than stupid or lascivious ads targeting straight people. And those godaddy.com ads are pretty offensive.

Somehow it is ok with you if women are exploited, as long as gays are kept in the closet.

  • orchidbloom

Actually the whole ad is a lie. Tebow’s mom claims the doctors told her to have an abortion while in the Philippines. Abortion has been illegal there since the 1930′s, so I doubt doctors there would have recommended that procedure.

it is hypocritical to ask people to make the right “choice”, when your real motive is to take away the freedom to make that choice.

I also feel it is wrong to exploit the families who have had to make this decision. Most families who are told to abort for medically indicated reasons do so at great personal pain. These are wanted children. Most will not grow up to be superstar quarterbacks, but die within hours of birth in terrible pain. It is wrong to demonize these families.

  • heysarge44

So what exactly is inappropriate about men watching a football game that are looking for romance with each other? Do you think eHarmony shouldn’t be putting ads on during the game or are you just emphasizing the stereotype that gay men don’t watch football and should be left out of the marketing campaign?

Granted, not all gay men are into watching football as religiously as their heterosexual counterparts, but there IS a large number of these men that do enjoy not just football but ALL sports (not just figure skating).

In actuality putting these ads on during the Super Bowl could potentially add viewership to an already over watched phenomenon as well as fight against stupid stereotypes that many right wing Americans have against the gay community and give CBS a chance to be inclusive in all of their advertising instead of being the moral thermometer for the world.

As far as Tim Tebow’s ad goes… they have the right to talk anti-abortion all they want. To me, it is far less “appropriate” of a place (to use your word) for this kind of ad, but if you throw in a college football star that has ALWAYS been a man of God on and off the field and suddenly it makes perfect sense to discuss abortion during the Super Bowl? Really?

  • orionseesall

I love how the religious morons want to foist their fairy tale characters on the rest of us! Black eye patches with biblical scriptures on them has to be the funniest thing I have seen yet. Who gives a rats ass what Tim Tebow believes? What happens when two born agains play against each other, does their “God” really have time to chose which one should win a football game??????

Look at the stars tonight and ask yourself “If something was able to create all of this, would this creator really care what I think?” Its like you giving a care what a grain of sand on a beach thinks of you!

    John said it best:

Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try
No hell below us, above us only sky

Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too
Imagine all the people livin’ life in peace – joo-hoo

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us, and the world will be as one

Imagine no possesions, I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world – joo-hoo

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us, and the world will live as one

LORD, please have mercy on America. Do what you must do to show America that this gay lifestyle is evil in your sight. Lord, please stop letting America influence and destroy the rest of the world with immoral value system like fornication and gay lifestyle. Please do something. DO SOMETHING O LORD!

  • heysarge44

God loves mankind. He doesn’t pick and choose between gays and straights. He loves every single one of his children. Even the ones that are overweight, despite their denial of Gluttony, even the super rich, despite their denial of Greed.

God doesn’t hate anyone, even sinners that show clear signs of Wrath such as yourself, and if you are unfamiliar with the 7 Deadly Sins … Wrath is defined as anger or “rage”, and may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. These feelings can manifest as vehement denial of the truth, both to others and in the form of self-denial, impatience with the procedure of law, and the desire to seek revenge outside of the workings of the justice system (such as engaging in vigilantism) and generally wishing to do evil or harm to others.

God is love, and you clearly do not understand the meaning of loving everyone equally. Read your whole bible, and not just the parts that apply to what you disagree or do not understand with in the world.

  • dukemcdingo

I say, let the homosexual commercial air! Tim Tebow should not be persecuted because of his sexual orientation. God made him that way, and if he wants to find a “partner” that shares his enthusiasm for orange and blue crocs, jorts and that spiky hair product he uses, more power to him.

  • graypeach

    Amen, heysarge.
Using the Bible to promote hate is sickening. Jesus told us all to love each other as He loved us. With a user name like jesus1000, it seems you would know that. Perhaps you should pick up the good book again and see what you find out.

  • missmary01

I think we can agree that there are far more Americans that would take issue with the killing of innocent lives than those that would take issue with two gay guys kissing. Frankly, we just don’t want to see two gay guys kissing. Just keep it in your bedroom and out of my living room!

Also America, try to put away for just a minute your fear of not being able to have your own “choice” just for independence sake and try really, really hard to think about what abortion does – it takes a life – PERIOD.

  • nealeb

if love is god and god is love why would he hate any two people that love each other? in any amount that a all powerful all knowing being would take such a human emotion and touch and act upon that emotion?

  • nealeb

personal I don’t want to see two men kissing but that does not mean they shouldn’t get there airtime hetro’s kiss for dating ads all the time so why not let the homosexual couple do the same.

and i am pro-choice i don’t see it as a practice that should be done willy nilly but again we have a securer government and people do have the choice to chose. took my min and thought about

  • http://whatchannelareyouwatching.com Stephen Fofanoff

I completely agree. Cancel the Go Daddy ads, every beer commercial (almost) and probably a few car commercials–they all focus on sexual preference, that is that using a particular product will make you (or someone else) more attractive and therefore lead to (presumably) having sex. Hey, I think there are even some soda commercials and snack foods that use sexual preference to sell a product. Those should go as well!

The point of the article is: you should be able to make up your own mind when you are presented with an idea that you disagree with–the television network should not make the choice for you in advance. Also, the funniest thing about it is that the gay dating site ad seems to focus on football–probably more so than any other commercial that will air during the big game.

  • mld1979

I’m sorry you were molested. But statistically, most child predators are straight. While you were abused by a same-sex predator, that does NOT mean that all gays are pedophiles, any more than the fact that I (a female) was sexually abused by a male means that all straights are pedos or otherwise twisted.

  • mld1979

Either you’re being very sarcastic, or have TOTALLY misunderstood the article

  • mld1979

“Just keep it in your bedroom and out of my living room!”

I could say that for two straights kissing. And if you WOULDN’T say it for two straights kissing, you’re an ignorant homophobe
