I was too busy watching the State of the Union—and surfing for reviews of the iPad—to catch up on last night’s American Idol, even though it featured television’s favorite guest star, Neil Patrick Harris. How was he? Bonus points to anyone who can evaluate his performance without using a “Legen—wait for it…” construction.

This is the first episode of Idol I’ve watched this year, and while NPH got a few good lines in along the way, the producers spent most of the time playing up a fake feud between him and Simon. Or at least it seemed fake. My guess is that he was actually a much better judge than any of the other three regulars. So, to head off any “Draft NPH!” grassroots movements, they had to produce the footage in such a way that the audience didn’t really get to see much of his cogent analysis or smart one-liners.
