Last fall, when I sat down to talk with Maureen Ryan and Alan Sepinwall about Lost (and other shows), one thing we discussed was that the show has done an excellent job of making you invested in characters who weren’t central—or weren’t even on the show—when it started. Alan, for instance, said that one of the most important things to him in the series finale was that Desmond, Penny and little Charlie had better not come to a sad end. (By the way, parts two and three of Mo Ryan’s voluminous interview with Lost’s producers are up, and worth reading.)
In that spirit, today’s LDG topic: Which character do you find yourself rooting for the most as the series comes to an end?
As irrational as it seems to say it, I’m still hoping that there is a possibility of some kind of postmortem redemption, vindication or salvation for John Locke. Locke’s story, when you think about it, is downright suicidally depressing: having led a miserable life of disappointment and betrayal, he comes to the Island, gets his self-confidence back, but ends up dying mistaken, betrayed and murdered by Ben Linus.
The small obstacle, of course, is the fact that Locke is dead, his form assumed by some type of evil spirit. But, you know, this is Lost. What’s a little death between friends?
