The Morning After: Hail to the Chefs

Quick spoilers for last night’s special episode of Iron Chef America coming up after the jump:

Amid watching screeners last night—a few more days and the midseason deluge really starts—I caught the special episode of Iron Chef America involving produce from Michelle Obama’s White House garden. Though this was a major food television event and a matter of great international import, the Chairman, for whatever reason, could not be bothered to attend, a diplomatic slight that will no doubt have great repercussions.

I don’t want to get into Presidential conspiracy theories here, but I had to wonder going in whether White House chef Comerford could be allowed to lose on a show that the White House itself consented to make possible for Food Network. In the end, though, I can’t credit Comerford and Bobby Flay’s victory to foul play or judges’ bias so much as the leathery, blackened football of a turkey that Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse plated up after incinerating it in a hell-bath of fryer oil. Even Ben Franklin would have rejected that cinder block as a national bird.

Your thoughts on the cook-off, the return of primetime originals or, well, anything else that’s gone on in TV and media in the past two weeks?
