Getting a Little More Justified

Busy working on things-that-are-not-this-blog. While I’m otherwise occupied, enjoy this new FX clip for Justified (formerly Lawman), premiering in March. It’s a trailer, rather than the cool extended scene we saw last fall (which is no longer available for embedding), but I’m excited anyway. Cowboy hats, Walton Goggins and rockets!

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

I like how the first shot (coming up behind Olyphant in a cowboy hat) references Seth Bullock’s arrival in Deadwood.

Still think Lawman was a better title but Steven Seagal got to it first so what can you do.

This was a great character in the Elmore Leonard books so let’s hope this fares better than the short-lived Karen Sisco series. The trailer has me really excited for this.

I am anticipating the premiere of Justified, as well. However, I suspect it is for different reasons. I am intrigued by the trailer, but I will be watching for stereotypes and negative publicity for my hometown. It’s funny, I was born and raised here in Harlan, KY but in my 24 years I have never seen anyone wearing a cowboy hat around here! Thanks to Diane Sawyer we have had a lot of bad publicity lately…add that to the doc “Harlan County USA” and the song “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” and it is no wonder the fiction writers’ fires are stoked. I hope they don’t play the locals off as a bunch of illiterate, toothless meth addicts; I will be sorely disappointed. I know that Hollywood and New York have their own stereotypes to deal with, but if the show is going to portray Harlan as anything but the beautiful God-fearing setting that I know it is, I’d rather be left “off the map.”
