Those Other People's Top 10 Lists

The top-ten lists are starting to come out fast and furious, in TV as in everything else, and this weekend AFI released its list of the top 10 TV shows (as well as top 10 movies) of the year. Having been on the AFI jury a couple times before (most recently in 2008), I feel especially invested in this one. After the jump, the list, and a couple thoughts:

The Big Bang Theory

Big Love

Friday Night Lights

Glee

Mad Men

Modern Family

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

Nurse Jackie

Party Down

True Blood

Much like the lists generated the years I’ve been on the AFI jury, the end product is, to me, about equal parts “Yeah!” and “Huh.” As you can see, it half matches my own list. As for the others—I’ve never been as big a fan of Big Bang and True Blood as other critics. On the other hand, even though I didn’t put them on my own top 10, I’m happy to see some love for Nurse Jackie, Party Down and even Ladies, which honestly I would not have come close to considering but was a distinctive and well-acted surprise this year.

One thing I do like about the AFI lists, agree or disagree, is that they tend to focus more on new shows, and they’re a little idiosyncratic. The reason, I think, is the structure and manner of the judging. I can’t go into details from my own years—they make you observe a pretty serious pinky-swear of secrecy—but the panels are equal parts TV critics, TV professionals and academics. Some of the people have watched most everything on TV that year, others not so much; some are  highly connected to the industry, some not at all. So the group’s voting is open to outside-the-usual choices, and one person’s passionate advocacy for a particular show can get it into the top 10.

In any case, this year’s is a thoughtful list—even the items I don’t agree with. Here’s the list of panel members—including C.C.H. Pounder and David Milch—if you want to know who to thank or blame.

    Glee Watch: NYADA, NYADA, NYADA

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

I also liked No. 1 Ladies, but I do have to wonder regarding the ethics of having someone Emmy-nominated for the series on the panel that put it there.

Since I’m not a tv critic I don’t spend any time watching shows that I don’t love, BUT I’m really, really surprised neither yours nor AFI’s list included Arrested Development or Firefly! They are incredibly unusual shows that make me glad for TV. Modern Family, really? That show has everything that’s typical in a sitcom and it seems to me that critics only love it because it’s *slightly* different from traditional sitcoms. I honestly never pay much attention to other people’s lists because I get how idiosyncratic they are, but Arrested Development, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica are not only my top 3 shows of the past 10 years, but my top 3 ever! The only shows I enjoyed almost as much are Lost, Weeds and Penn & Teller’s Bullshit! I’ve read your blog since it started and felt like I was on your wavelength in terms of how we enjoy shows, but now I’m left sort of disillusioned.

AFI’s list, and mine, are top shows of *2009*. If AD or Firefly made those lists, it would be highly unusual. My top-shows-of-the-decade list will be out over the holidays (next week, possibly?), and you can give me my proper lashing then.

I’m suprised at the lack of Breaking Bad, which IMO was the best show of the year.
