The Morning After: Flip! Flip! Flip! Adelphia!

I don’t really have a good excuse for not doing more It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia writeups at Tuned In. Well, I have excuses, just not good ones. My Thursday-night/Friday-morning dance card is full enough as it is, and the episodes are self-contained enough that one review would probably be pretty much like the last.

But the fifth-season finale aired last night, and it’s time to salute the show for its best season since the second, and possibly ever. Each actor seems to have gotten a confident handle on his or her character without making them seem rote, and “The Gang Reiginites the Rivalry” was a nice sum-up of the show’s essentials: pettiness, beer and poison. And the ending, in which the gang “loses” the flip competition but wins by playing dirty pool, gets at the gang’s essence—they’re lowlifes, and they pride themselves on it.

Here’s looking forward to next year. In the meantime, if you need to clear the image of Danny DeVito in skinny jeans from your head, try watching him butt-naked in the Always Sunny Christmas DVD.
