For That Special (TV-Loving Modernist) Someone This Holiday

DESIGN BY EXERGIAN

A while ago I alerted you to a blog featuring the most awesome minimalist-design TV posters ever. There was enough interest that I thought I should inform you that, just in time for the holidays, the posters are now available for sale.

I haven’t seen the product at first hand, so I can’t vouch for the quality, the service or the seller—buyer beware!—and they ship from Europe, so they’re not cheap (generally £50 plus including shipping). But they’re apparently printed on “ultra-smooth fine art paper,” and the images are clever and cool.

Tuned In received no promotional consideration for this post. But if you’re grateful for the tip, there’s still time to buy me this before Hanukkah’s over. Or before Feb. 2, anyway. I’m just saying.

    Glee Watch: NYADA, NYADA, NYADA

Spoilers for the season finale of Glee below:

One beef I often have with Glee episodes is that they move too fast, go in too many directions, try to cram in too much at once. You might say that about “Goodbye,” the season 3 finale, but in this case that approach seemed about right. It’s an episode about graduation, and graduation is something that, no matter how much you plan for and anticipate it, still goes too fast. Graduating is something you do, but in the moment it feels like something that happens to you, suddenly and all at once, like going over a waterfall.

Just wanted to say thank you for the post. I just wanted to bring this up so as to not cause any confusion. The posters are priced at £50 in Europe but as the US doesn’t pay VAT US customers will get them for 15% less, and as postage is included in the price you are getting a better deal than our UK customers. Also please note the final Christmas shipping date from the UK to the US has now passed so unfortunately anybody wanting these presents for the festive period may be disappointed, Thank you. Happy Minimalism.

I’m sorry, but at this point minimalism has become the most over-hyped design trend in the history of the universe. Just because something is simple, doesn’t automatically make it interesting. This poster series is clever, but many of them don’t make any attempt to communicate the spirit of the show (why is the complexity, conflict and social tragedy of the Wire represented here by calm, neutral, symmetrical shapes, for example… any why a 50s phone?). I don’t bring this up to be a crank– I applaud the designer’s originality in creating the series. But ‘most awesome ever’?. Talk about tyranny of low expectations.

Some are better than others, and a few were inscrutable to me, but I liked the Wire graphic. To me it recalls a pay phone, not a ’50s phone. Maybe I haven’t used a payphone in too long? And it harks back to the first season, when the “wire” of the title referred to the seasonlong effort to get the wire up to surveil the Barksdale gang.

Here’s another recent effort in a similar spirit that I really like: http://omgposters.com/2010/07/31/olly-moss-2010-rolling-roadshow-poster-series/
