Adam Lambert Too—Ahem—"Controversial" for GMA

American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert wanted attention with his performance at the American Music Awards, and he’s got it: Good Morning America confirmed that it’s canceling Lambert’s scheduled performance tomorrow. After the AMA performance (also on ABC), in which Lambert groped dancers, kissed a male musician and shoved a male dancer’s face into his crotch, ABC said it was concerned about airing “a similar performance” early in the morning. [Update: But CBS isn't! The Early Show will have Lambert on tomorrow morning.]

You might know the above-described acts by another name: “a Madonna concert in 1990.” But apparently it’s one thing to be lewd on stage if you’re a woman whom gay men iconize, and another if you’re a gay man yourself.

Now, I’ll grant you that Lambert probably walked into this “controversy” with eyes wide open, and that the performance seemed like an unsubtle, manufactured play for attention. But the subtext of ABC’s decision is no less ugly for being provoked. Notwithstanding the fact that Lambert groped dancers of both genders onstage, fat chance ABC would have canceled the performance had some of them not been male. And does GMA really believe that Lambert (who has done the show before) would do a “similar” performance at breakfast time?

Anyway, one group at least will be happy*: our friends at the Parents Television Council, who yesterday issued a statement deploring the performance, citing the media’s effects on—get this—”American teenagers—and especially teenaged girls.” Were we watching the same concert?

[*Update: Actually, as a commenter notes, although the PTC complained about the "tasteless" performance and said advertisers should be held "accountable," a spokesman for the group says the PTC believes canceling Lambert's GMA appearance was an "overreaction." And if even the PTC thinks you're overreacting...]

    Honestly,

I was completely pissed the F off at Lambert for the AMA mess. I had my niece w/me and let her stay up and I didn’t appreicate that she saw it. I actually wasn’t even aware of what she saw until the next day when I caught the blogs and saw the video since, ironically, I was talking to her Mom on the phone and she fell asleep on the couch.

So I caught hell for it.

Maybe that is clouding my thinking on this; but I hate the whole theme of the performance. Think the fact the guy wasn’t aware of the kiss was completely unacceptable and in that light clear harassment. The kiss was nothing; through from what I can see the dude’s not much of a kisser. HATE the fact he fingered that chick.

The fellatio actually didn’t bother me other than an 11 year old watched it. But, she didn’t have much to say and I left the whole conversation to my sister who is pissed at me for (1) letting her stay up late and (2) not changing the channel (forget I was on the phone).

    Whatever.

I think GMA had good reason to do this; especially since ABC aired that hot mess.

If Lambert had just kissed a bunch of guys and girls, fine. But the whole S&M theme, sex slaves, and the fingering and fellatio screams for something or someone to talk to the dude. I’m sorry, if Janet Jackson gets called out for a wardrobe malfunction he ought to be forced to apologize for such a sexually explicit performance. And the fact that some of his “in the momment” actions weren’t scripted and therefore constitute IMO harrasment.

The dude was fine with it; but still that’s not cool to pull that on someone IMO. And I don’t know if fingering that chick or the fellatio was scripted too. I was thinking not since they didn’t pull away quickly w/the camera.

    JMHO

I agree that Lambert totally knew what he was doing. But I think dismissing it as an “unsubtle, manufactured play for attention” is a bit dismissive in that I think that the primary motive was to draw attention to the double standard applied to gay men. Lambert is not Madonna, Lady Gaga, or Justin Timberlake, who have established careers and fanbases that ensure they will sell CDs no matter what the controversy. He’s a new performer who could easily be forgotten six months from now as many other American Idol contestants have been. There’s a definite risk to him rocking the boat too hard.

Not to get into an argument with anyone here, but “If Lambert had just kissed a bunch of guys and girls, fine. But the whole S&M theme, sex slaves, and “etc etc is pretty much the definition of every Britney Spears performance I have ever seen

I am offended by ABC’s decision to cancel Adam’s performance on GMA. I realize that not everyone is a fan and not everyone enjoyed his performance on the AMAs Sunday night, but this decision is discriminatory and cowardly. I will be happily tuning in to the Early Show tomorrow morning. By the way, Adam’s album is really good. Keep an open mind and take a listen.

Thanks, as always, for your reasonable approach to the TV you faithfully review for us. I didn’t watch the show but watched footage of the controversy the next day and, yeah, I get that it’s not appropriate for the possible audience watching it, but I totally agree that people are upset about exposing children to homosexual content. For months I’ve been hearing about “Lady Gaga” and her antics and there is no way Lambert did anything she hasn’t done–for that matter, he did nothing Madonna didn’t do. My God, in the very same show, “Lady Gaga” appeared to be naked and was gyrating sensually! At this point, I’m rooting for Lambert to be incredibly successful because 1)I really like his music and 2) I want his influence to make gay sexuality just as mundane as the silly performances from Britney Spears, “Gaga”, et al.

PLEASE amend your article to reflect that the Parents Television Council (PTC) does not think “GMA” should have canceled Adam’s performance. Dan Isett, Director of Public Policy for the PTC tells Access, “I do think it’s a little bit unfortunate. This is not a personal crusade against Adam Lambert.”

“The idea that he should be scrubbed from TV completely is not where we’re going,” Isett continued. “It may be a bit of an overreaction on ABC’s part. The important thing is that networks have the easy ability to air on a delay to prevent this sort of thing.”

People were warned in advance that this would be racey, and sexual..YOU WERE WARNED…they showed it extremely late…but, a little after 8 pm…Janet J…did a crotch grab…not much media mention on that one…Adams song is one heck of a tune, and he based his performance on the song..it was pure genius. ABC is way out of line here, and I for one will be keeping my eyes on them. If they chose to do this to one they better be ready to be put under a microscope. THIS was NOT prime-time….I thought it was a great performance, but the sound system was bad, all the entertainers sounded off…

Alright, I am a mother to 3 daughters and take care of my 11 year old sister. Now seeing as the AMA’s were on Sunday night and Adam’s performance was on late, I told my sister that she had to go to bed and I would let her watch it on Monday(DVR’d it) I watched it. For the record, I loved it. I am of the age that remembers when Madonna came out with her “coffee table” book ‘Sex’. I remember the Justify my Love video. I see nothing wrong with what he did, yeah might have offended some people but I am sure that it would have been ok if Britney Spears did the same thing.(has anyone seen the video for her new song ’3′?) Or if he was kissing women only. It is 2009, it should really not surprise anyone that he did that, he has made no bones about how he expresses himself and his music, he is going to push the envelope and piss people off. Oh, and for those of you that are wondering if I let my sister and daughters watch his performance, Yes i did. They loved it and they asked questions which I answered honestly. Do not let the double standard throw it’s glare on everything that he does. He is a great performer and I wish him the best of luck. BTW his album is fantastic!

doubleang, I haven’t had a problem w/Spears through there was a point she was just not appropriate for kids. I haven’t seen her in concert and the only concert “controversy” was her kissing Madonna and I don’t have a problem w/that. I would have a problem if she’s fingering people on stage and simulating fellatio in concert. I was just upset that the kid saw that, I didn’t know until the next day when I read about it (missed the Morning shows) and then deal w/my sister.

So I can’t speak to the whole thing but the show wasn’t appropriate for my niece. And I don’ t want him banned from GMA but I do think ABC should apologize and so should he. That’s just not the image I had of him the few times I caught him on Idol. I wasn’t ever expecting the Youtube I saw. And I don’t think I’m over reacting.

I was talking to a friend and she was asking me the same thing; If I was just having a visceral reaction b/c it’s a gay guy. And after being offended I stopped and thought it through and I really don’t think I am. There was a point I didn’t think Spears was appropriate for kids. And this was not appropriate for kids. It wasn’t glam rockerish. And I don’t think I’m having a reaction to the guy b/c he’s gay.

But I thought the thing went over the line and I still do. I think better for ABC to apologize and have him on the show. But everyone seems to just be ignoring the whole thing by sweeping it away. So fine. But I was reading the fellatio was in the rehearsal and they knew that was in the show and I’m wondering if the whole thing was so planned out this is on ABC. They could have put a different rating on the show or something.

The whole situation did piss me off.

  • greenlyfe

Also: The kiss wasn’t the issue and I’m glad ABC didn’t edit it out of the show for the west coast feed.

The fellatio was and they edited that but it was in rehearsal so it’s rather disingenuous of them, IMO. But that was the big deal to me personally and the fingering her thing.

  • Bemused

Having finally watched the video, I think some of the criticism is way over the top. After reading the repeated references to “fingering” and “fellatio” (James–have you had an uptick in traffic?), I expected much, much worse than what I saw. While I agree that the performance wasn’t appropriate for prime time network TV, the moves referenced were extremely fleeting, and the labels given them are really exaggerated.

P.S. I thought the song sucked and, never having heard Lambert before but knowing the hype, I expected a lot more from his singing.

First of all… Greenlife, you dropped the ball on this and didn’t pay attention to what the kid was watching. Stop blaming ABC and Adam Lambert. Take responsibility and don’t let it happen again. Sheesh.

The same goes to all the other complaining, whining, annoying people who just won’t seem to shut up. Someone on here made a great point. ABC promoted Lambert’s performance throughout the AMA’s as “eye-popping” and something that people would be talking about the next day. Really, guys? Really? No one heard that? Seriously? I find it really hard to believe. Beyond that, it was nearly 11:00 pm when his performance aired. That’s the time slot that networks reserve the more adult content for because, well, kids should be in bed! This is true especially on a school night. So… if your child was up at 11:00 and watching an “eye-popping” performance you didn’t want them to see, AND you didn’t snatch up the remote and change the channel… then shame on you. It’s your own fault. Parents… take responsibilities for your parenting and stop leaving it up to the PTC and everyone else. Oye.

Furthermore, there is a double-standard, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. It was hot when Britney, Madonna, and Xtina had their little kiss at the VMAs, and I didn’t hear anyone complaining about any of the other sexual performances of the night. If only Adam had been straight and talking about bitches and ho’s while they danced around in nearly nothing. Then, things would have been just fine… not even a blip on the radar.

  • Bemused

“If only Adam had been straight and talking about bitches and ho’s…”

    Or “chicks.”
