Words I would not have guessed last spring that I would be typing today: Dollhouse returns for a second season tonight. The series made an amazing mid-season creative course correction during its first run and surprised everyone by getting renewed (on low ratings but the strength of an intense fan base and healthy DVR replay). So I can’t blame the first episode for trying to give new viewers a chance* with a basic A-storyline in which Echo (Eliza Dushku) is assigned to marry an arms dealer.

But while the episode doesn’t take off from the explosive, DVD-only final season one episode “Epitaph One,” the show’s ongoing storyline—about the Dollhouse’s future and its ethical implications—is serviced with an outstanding performance from Amy Acker. (There’s also a smaller, also impressive turn from Dichen Lachmann.) I don’t think I’ll be doing a recap, so feel free to share your post-show impressions here. Be your best.

*I’m not as optimistic about new viewers and thus am writing this post on the assumption that if you’re likely to watch, you already know the premise. See my original review if you want more.
