Hughes penned the screenplay to this, the first entry in the now seemingly never-ending National Lampoon’s movie franchise. Maybe franchise is too light a word, as the movie is practically a rite of American cinema viewing. Family bonding, road trips, theme parks, tying the dog to the back bumper and then driving off — experiences we can all relate to. And Chevy Chase’s greatest moments always happen when he goes off on a tear.
