TV Tonight: Fire Another One Up

Showtime
Showtime

While I and most other critics have been focusing on tonight’s Showtime debut of Nurse Jackie, the network also premieres season 5 of Weeds, something I usually look forward to every summer. And not just because it means another cheesecake publicity photo of Mary-Louise Parker every year. That said, I’ll admit that season 4′s Mexican escapades took the show a little far over the top and lost me, so while I’ll give the fifth season another chance, I’ll be watching it in real time with the rest of you.

I haven’t given up: Rescue Me has proven a show can catch a second wind in its fifth year.  Will you rejoin Weeds, or has Breaking Bad taken the only unlikely-drug-kingpin spot in your heart?

Apropos of frakking awesomeness, Ausiello is reporting over at Time corporate-sibling EW.com that Katee Sackhoff has been cast on next season’s “24″ as “Dana Walsh, a highly respected and down to earth data analyst at the new and improved New York branch of CTU.”
    .
So as to not offer any other “spoilerish” scoop (I hardly think casting decisions for a character are spoilers), here’s the link if you’re curious: http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/06/exclusive-katee.html#more

Yeah Weeds stopped being funny after season 2, although I still continued to watch, but season 4 was a bit much for me. If I start hearing it gets good again maybe I’ll pick it up again.

If only I had Showtime… We just got caught up on last season of Weeds this past weekend, and we loved it. I loved the Mexico stuff, the “get mommy a pillow” thing, all the crazy hijinks with the 2 kids, the strange development of the Andy-Nancy chemistry, the Doug-hitting-rock-bottom stuff, the gentle coyote stuff, the “getting the gang back together” and the falling out with Guillermo – the only part of the season that I DIDN’T like was pretty much anything involving Celia – it was all totally over-the-top with her the whole time. I certainly found crackhead Celia to be worth some laughs, but the character was turned into a total caricature. The side story with Doug and Andy and Maria was a bit silly, also, but none of that detracted from our enjoyment of the season as a whole… I’ll definitely keep up with future seasons as soon as the episodes become available to non-Showtime subscribers…
