Happy Lost Day! What Did Daniel Faraday Know, and When Did He Know It?

While everyone may be abuzz about Obama’s first 100 days today, they pale in significance next to the first 100 episodes of Lost. Number 100, airing tonight—and you may want to pad your recordings in case that press conference runs long—is reputedly Daniel Faraday-centric, presumably picking up from the point where he returned to the Island aboard the Dharma submarine.

ABC’s description hints that tonight he’ll be letting us in on what he knows about The Island. But my bigger question about him is: what is his game? How straight has he been with his associates about the Island and the nature of their time-travel on it? And most important: does he really believe that one can’t change the past?

He has, of course, said that repeatedly and bluntly—with the exception of saying that Desmond is “special” and may be able to break the rules somehow. So the rules of primetime TV misdirection, and his strong motive (wishing he could prevent the death of his love Charlotte) lead me to believe that he intends to try to break the rules himself, or, at least, that during his time with Dharma he’s been boning up on how it might be possible to do just that.

What’s he after, and what will be the consequences? Sound off here. It beats watching the cable news folks count to 100 all day.
