I didn’t get around to reviewing Fox’s Sit Down, Shut Up, from Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz, before going on vacation. But I did watch two episodes, and found myself in that uncomfortably familiar position for a TV critic: trying to will myself to enjoy a show I had high expectations of, from a writer whose work I’ve enjoyed. There are a number of flaws of this animated show that other reviews have pointed out: that while the quick, pun-heavy humor is reminiscent of Arrested Development’s, SDSU lacks its predecessors’ characters and relationships, which grounded the absurd humor in a relatable human framework. But the essential problem was simpler: the two episodes I saw simply weren’t funny enough.

That may not be high-order TV criticism, but I was on vacation, and I’m sticking with that impression. Anyone care to differ?
