I will admit it: I have not had any  interest in an edition of The Bachelor/ette since the first G. W. Bush term. But it appears that the whole Internet is abuzz about the season of The Bachelor that concluded last night, so might as well put up a discussion post, for anyone interested. The controversy over last night’s finale: single dad Jason Mesnick chose and proposed to one of his flames, Melissa, only to later dump her, on national TV, for runner-up Molly. Because, you know, no one ever gets publicly dumped on a dating show. (Kristen Baldwin has an extensive writeup here.

The controversy is such that former Bachelorette Trista Sutter has felt compelled to weigh in on Jason’s caddery: “[W]hat disappointed me as a mom is that he introduced both girls to Ty (Jason’s son). Melissa was around, and now she’s gone. What is Ty going to think?”

The breakup, in any event, promises to be a boon for ABC: the network airs a second After the Rose special tonight. And the season had already been the highest-rated Bachelor in years, supposedly because viewers had thought that, with Jason, they would finally get to see a dating show in which a nice guy finds true love.

By disabusing them of that idea, Jason has at least contributed something to society.
