TV on the Radio

If I were better organized, I’d have mentioned this in advance, but at this moment I am on WBUR Public Radio in Boston discussing online TV and the changes in the TV business. Listen live, or it should be archived later.

    James,
    .
    Good show! I caught most of it while driving in the car. I wish I was at home so that I could have called in. I want to make two points:
    .
    1.) They need to make hulu at least as convenient as pirating the material. In some cases, it’s great like Arrested Development. I can watch almost any episode and honestly this a show that I completely missed while it was on the air. In other cases, it sucks. Why can we only see the 3-4 latest House episodes? Do they want me to download season 1 illegally?
    .
    2.) This is probably the more important point. Someone on the show–I think the other guest–said that they make less money showing TV on the internet. That’s because they’re treating internet advertising the same as television advertising. On the internet, you can have nearly perfectly targeted advertising. Hulu could slowly collect your demographic information over time and eventually have a very comprehensive view of who you are and what you are likely to buy.
    .
    Let’s say I go to hulu to watch an episode of 30 rock. Before it starts hulu asks “Do you like cereal? yes/no” or “How old are you?”. Now, hulu can sell advertising to Kelloggs saying we can just show your ads to 25 year olds who already say they like cereal. That’s worth way more than saying we can show your ads to x million viewers of which 80% are within the ages of 20-45 (or whatever crappy demographic data they have on normal TV viewers).

    @btmorex: Thanks for listening:
    .
    1) From your lips to God’s ears. Also, the day they make a Hulu app for the iPhone will be a red-letter day around here. (There are, I believe, also technical obstacles.)
    .
    2) Yes, not just online TV but online journalism outlets (ahem) would do themselves a lot of favors by realizing that they need to use new advertising mechanisms for a new medium, rather than try to apply the last technology’s advertising model in the new one.
