Shield Watch: DIY Edition

In an ingenious bit of counterprogramming FX aired a new episode of The Shield last night, despite the distractions going on in the news. I don’t have a writeup for you: there was this election last night, and one thing led to another and… yeah, that’s not going to happen. But I invite those of you who are inclined to discuss, partly for my own selfish reasons, because I’m going to be writing on the series finale and want to hear as many people’s thoughts as possible. If you watched this instead of the other endgame last night, how’s it working for you?

Even I have no idea where the plot is going on a weekly basis – exactly why the show is so entertaining!

On one hand, I am surprised by Claudette’s sudden strong intervention into the melee. With all her health concerns the show has been bringing up, I thought that they would serve to knock her out of the resolution, rather than some stereotypical “Hero gives her last breath defeating the dragon (well, the Vic) and falls on the field of battle)”. Hoping there’s another twist in the wings…

And as the second half of that issue, I am surprised by how small the Cartel matter is. I had thought the show bringing in a bigger outside threat would serve to raise the stakes (and the danger) on everyone – instead it’s turned into a B-story, as the only idea any writer had on tying Aceveda into a plot that had long since left him behind. I thought Aceveda simply picking up the pieces from the climactic disaster and waltzing into the Mayor’s office would fit the grim reality of the show best, but now I have no idea where this plotline is going either.

Speaking of B-stories, how does Dutch’s sudden involvement in the Strike Team implosion give him time to resolve his serial killer issues?

And the Mara as Yoko parallel keeps growing: despite being the cause of nearly all the Strike Team’s disharmony (it was her spending the Money Train cash that led to their breakup in the first place), let it never be said she wasn’t loyal to her man…
