TV Weekend: Things That Are Not The Wire

As we prepare to send off TV’s greatest drama, a few moments to remember your other options this weekend:

* The finale-that’s-not-really-a-finale of Breaking Bad. The series, originally intended to have a ten-episode order, was unceremoniously cut to seven by the strike, which means that the final episode ends the season arbitrarily. It’s a strong episode, though, and I was struck again by how audacious the premise is: not the drug dealing, but making a series which is about a man dealing with his (probably) impending premature death–made somewhat more accessible by a high-concept story about drug dealing. That’s right: the crystal meth dealing and dissolving bodies in the bathtub are the feel-good elements! It’s been a strong run, and I hope Bryan Cranston gets a second shot at this character.

* We haven’t really discussed it here, but I can see myself getting sucked in to Oprah’s Big Give. It’s like The Amazing, and Slightly Sanctimonious, Race.

* And let’s not forget that garbage show. What else could you possibly want?
