What do I, a professional TV critic, watch on New Year’s Eve? The inside of my eyelids. I pride myself on passing out well before the stroke of midnight these days, partly from parental exhaustion, partly because Mrs. Tuned In and I throw a New Year’s Day Open House and I need to wake up and cook, and partly because I hate New Year’s Eve TV. Dick Clark, Carson Daly, MTV, VH1–I just can’t stand the forced jollity of it all. (Although I remember flipping the channels just after midnight on Millennium Eve 2000 and seeing two Weather Channel anchors with party hats and noisemakers. Good times!)
Am I missing something? Do you have a favorite Auld Lang Syne TV hangout? Or are you saving it all up for the Rose Parade on HGTV?
