File this under News I Didn’t Expect to Be Reading This Soon and Come to Think of It Probably Ever: The Hollywood Reporter says that HBO has renewed Tell Me You Love Me for a second season. Having watched the entire season, I’m delighted; having read the mixed critical reception and seen the ratings, I’m stunned. According to the Reporter, it’s averaged 910,000 viewers, actually surprisingly high to me since that’s not far from where it debuted. (Also approved: pilots for a biker drama from The Rapture’s Michael Tolkin, which intrigues me, and for a medical drama from Robert Zemeckis, which, we’ll see.)

Why the confidence? As long as HBO is sticking by the relationship drama–beautifully acted and finely observed, if uneven–I’m not asking questions. The Deadwood and John from Cincinnati fans may commence throwing blunt objects, however.
